Madras High Court slams R Balasubramanian’s abusive conduct; Bar Council bars him from practice pending disciplinary proceedings.

Chennai: In a strong move to uphold the dignity of the legal profession, the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has temporarily stopped advocate R Balasubramanian from practicing law anywhere in India.
This decision was made after he was found using inappropriate and abusive language against judges and courts, both inside and outside the courtroom.

The Bar Council took this strict action on July 4, 2025, just a few days after the Madras High Court ordered the police to take criminal action against him.
Following the court’s direction, the Bar Council also started disciplinary action and decided to suspend him from practicing law until the disciplinary case is completely resolved.
In its official statement, the Bar Council said,
“The Bar Council has perused the entire records and has passed a resolution dated 4.7.2025 prohibiting said advocate from practicing as an Advocate before all Courts, Tribunals and other authorities in India either in his name or in any assumed name till the disposal of the disciplinary proceedings initiated by the Bar Council.”
The issue started when R Balasubramanian, who was representing three people facing contempt of court proceedings, prevented the police from arresting them.
The police had gone to carry out a non-bailable warrant (NBW) issued by the High Court, but the lawyer obstructed them from doing their job.
The High Court took this matter seriously. Justice PT Asha noted that the advocate used extremely offensive and insulting language against the court. The Judge then instructed the Bar Council to take action.
The Court said,
“Considering the fact that a member of this noble profession has acted in such a fashion which has brought discredit to the profession Mr. CK Chandrasekar, learned standing counsel for the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry present before this Court is directed to take necessary steps to initiate proceedings against Mr. R Balasubramanian for the aforesaid acts,”
The case also revealed more troubling details. Earlier, Balasubramanian had filed an application in court on behalf of his clients, which they believed was about a property dispute.
But during the court hearing, all three individuals confessed that they did not understand what was written in the application.
They admitted that the document was written in English and that the lawyer had not explained it to them.
They thought it was a routine property case, but it turned out to be a request to transfer their case—something they were not aware of.
The Court found this extremely concerning. It was disturbed by the actions of the lawyer and noted that the words used in the documents were not just inappropriate but also disrespectful toward judges, including a judicial officer from the labour court.
The Court pointed out that the entire affidavit was drafted by the lawyer himself, making the matter even more serious.
This case highlights the importance of professional conduct in the legal field. Lawyers are expected to maintain respect and dignity towards the courts and judiciary.
Using foul language, misguiding clients, and interfering with police duties not only damages the reputation of the profession but also undermines public trust in the justice system.
