The NIA told a Delhi court that 26/11 accused Tahawwur Rana could expose Lashkar-e-Taiba’s ongoing and future terror plots. His custody is vital to uncover key operational details of the terror group.
New Delhi: On May 1, The National Investigation Agency (NIA) recently told a Delhi court that Tahawwur Rana, one of the main accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, could give important information about the current and future terror plans of the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba and its chief Hafiz Saeed.
The NIA made this statement on April 28 while asking for Rana’s custody before the special NIA judge Chander Jit Singh. The agency believes that Rana, who is currently under investigation, has deep knowledge of how the terrorist group operates and what it is planning next.
According to sources, the NIA said,
“Hafiz Saeed is an accused in the case and his terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba is still involved in terror attacks in India. Rana’s custody is required to unearth the operational details of the organisation.”
The NIA also told the court that they are questioning Rana carefully, keeping his health condition in mind. This was in response to Rana’s claims that he was being interrogated for 20 hours every day. However, the agency denied this and said that the questioning was being done in a “measured” way.
The agency strongly argued that Rana was not cooperating properly in the investigation and that more time in custody was necessary to uncover all the details related to the case.
The NIA stated,
“There is a contention of non-cooperation of accused in investigation, coupled with the fact of the extent, gamut, depth and widespread nature of the present case which has allegation of hatching the conspiracy at a global level in the sense of accused been from one country and then settled in another country where they hatched conspiracy against India, the request of NIA seeking further police custody remand of accused does have merit.”
Rana’s role in the planning and execution of the 2008 Mumbai attacks has been under investigation for a long time. He is known to be a close associate of David Coleman Headley, who carried out reconnaissance missions in Mumbai before the attacks.

The NIA is now focusing on gathering more intelligence from Rana that could help prevent future terror activities by Lashkar-e-Taiba and possibly expose international links involved in the conspiracy.
The case is sensitive and complex, involving transnational crimes, and the NIA is working to trace the full network of individuals who helped plan and support terror strikes against India.
Rana’s information, according to the NIA, could be crucial in understanding how the group functions and how India can protect itself from further attacks.
