RANCHI: The Jharkhand High Court today has issued a directive to the state government regarding the distressing gang-rape incident involving a foreign tourist in Dumka. The court has called for a comprehensive action taken report detailing the steps undertaken following the harrowing event.

The incident, which occurred on March 1, involved a 28-year-old woman who was allegedly gang-raped at Kurumahat in the Hansdiha police station area. The victim was spending the night in a tent with her husband when the attack occurred, according to police reports. This incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of tourists in the region.

In response to the gravity of the situation, the Jharkhand High Court took suo motu cognizance of the case on Monday, emphasizing the need for immediate and effective action. The court has instructed the state government to submit a detailed report on the actions taken in the aftermath of the incident.

Furthermore, the High Court has inquired about the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) currently in place for ensuring the safety of foreign tourists visiting the state. The court is seeking clarity on whether such a protocol exists and, if not, what the future plans are to establish one. This move underscores the necessity of having robust mechanisms in place to protect international visitors from such heinous crimes.

The next hearing for this case is scheduled for March 13, where the state government is expected to present its findings and outline the measures it has implemented to address the issue.

In the meantime, the state government has reported to the court that eight individuals accused in the case have been apprehended. Additionally, a compensation of Rs 10 lakh has been provided to the victim in an attempt to offer some form of redress for the ordeal she endured.

Following the incident, the woman and her husband, who were on a world tour traveling on two motorcycles, left Dumka on March 5 to continue their journey. The departure of the couple under such traumatic circumstances highlights the urgent need for enhanced safety measures for tourists, particularly those from foreign countries.

This case has brought to the forefront the critical issue of tourist safety in Jharkhand and the broader implications for India’s image as a safe destination for international travelers. The Jharkhand High Court’s intervention serves as a reminder of the judiciary’s role in ensuring that the executive and law enforcement agencies uphold the highest standards of safety and security for all visitors.

As the state awaits the court’s next hearing, the incident serves as a wake-up call for the need to establish comprehensive and effective SOPs for tourist safety. It is imperative for the state to take decisive actions to restore confidence among foreign tourists and safeguard the reputation of India as a welcoming and secure travel destination.
