Shilpa Shetty Kundra has filed a suit in the Bombay High Court seeking protection of her personality rights due to illegal use of her photos and morphed content online. The move aims to stop unauthorised commercial exploitation of her identity and safeguard her reputation.

Mumbai: Personality rights protection by public figures is becoming more common as celebrities are increasingly facing misuse of their names, images and identities. Apart from financial loss, such misuse seriously damages their personal image and public reputation.

Keeping this growing issue in mind, Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra has taken legal action to protect her identity and dignity.

According to exclusive information received by HT City, Shilpa Shetty, who has had a long and successful career in the Indian film industry and also won the international reality show Big Brother in 2007, has filed a lawsuit in the Bombay High Court seeking protection of her personality rights.

The case highlights the serious problem of unauthorised use of celebrity images and names for commercial purposes.

The actor has named several websites in her suit for illegally using her photographs to promote various products and services without her consent. These platforms reportedly misused her identity to attract customers and generate profit.

The matter becomes even more serious as morphed pictures and manipulated videos of the actor have also been circulated online, which further harms her dignity and personal image.

The case includes 27 known defendants, while hundreds of other unknown parties have been included under the John Doe category, allowing the court to take action against unidentified individuals or entities involved in such illegal acts in the future.

This legal move aims to prevent further exploitation and ensure strict control over the misuse of her personality.

Advocate Sana Raees Khan, who is representing Shilpa Shetty in this case, strongly defended the actor’s stand and clarified the seriousness of the legal violation, stating,

“Ms. Shilpa Shetty has built her reputation over decades of work and no entity can appropriate her name or likeness without consent. The unauthorised commercial exploitation of her identity is an outright assault on her dignity and hard earned reputation. No individual or platform has the right to exploit her reputation for unlawful commercial gain and we will ensure strict enforcement of her personality rights. We have moved the Bombay High Court to put a stop to such misuse and to safeguard her identity from being treated as a commodity.”

This case once again highlights the importance of personality rights in the digital era, where celebrity images are often misused on social media, fake websites and misleading advertisements.

Shilpa Shetty’s legal action serves as a strong warning to all platforms and individuals who profit by exploiting public figures without permission and reinforces the growing recognition of personality rights under Indian law.
