Allahabad High Court grants interim bail to Dr Medusa alias Madri Kakoti in a case over her social media posts on the Pahalgam terror attack. FIR was filed by an ABVP leader citing threats to national integrity.
Prayagraj: Today, on June 09, the Allahabad High Court on Monday granted interim anticipatory bail to Madri Kakoti, a satirist and assistant professor at the Linguistics Department of Lucknow University, in a case concerning her social media posts about the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
This update was first reported by Media.
The bail order was passed by Justice Rajeev Singh, who gave temporary relief to Kakoti in relation to an FIR filed against her in April at Hasanganj Police Station, following a complaint by Jatin Shukla, a leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
In his complaint, Shukla alleged that Kakoti, who is known on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by the handle Dr Medusa, made remarks that targeted India’s unity, integrity, and sovereignty.
He stated that she frequently used the phrase “saffron terrorists” in her posts.
He also claimed that some of her social media posts were reportedly shared by Pakistani media channels, indicating that the content may have been used to portray India negatively across the border.

Following this, the Uttar Pradesh Police registered a case against Kakoti under various serious charges, including those related to endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India, as mentioned in the Live Law report.
The background of this case lies in a deadly terrorist attack that occurred on April 22 near Baisaran, close to Pahalgam town in Jammu and Kashmir.
The attack resulted in the deaths of 26 people, while 17 others were injured. According to the police, the terrorists had targeted tourists after asking for their names to confirm their religion.
Notably, all but three of those killed were Hindus, pointing to the communal nature of the assault.
In the aftermath of this brutal attack, various states, including Assam, began cracking down on individuals who posted content that authorities believed to be pro-Pakistan or divisive in nature.
This crackdown included monitoring of online platforms for any remarks that could potentially disturb public order or national unity.
The legal case against Dr. Medusa (Madri Kakoti) has sparked widespread discussion about the limits of free speech, especially on social media, and the legal consequences of expressing opinions that could be interpreted as anti-national.
The court’s decision to grant her interim anticipatory bail provides temporary protection from arrest while the case proceeds, offering her an opportunity to present her side before the law.
