Kolkata, Dec 20: The Calcutta High Court on Friday permitted a doctors’ organization to hold a demonstration from December 20 to 26 to demand justice for the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital medic who was allegedly raped and murdered in August.
However, the court instructed the Joint Forum of Doctors to conduct the protest at a location 50 feet away from Dorina Crossing at Esplanade in central Kolkata to avoid causing traffic congestion in the busy area.
The doctors’ body had initially proposed a continuous sit-in at Dorina Crossing, a major intersection in the city.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, delivering the order, noted that since the organizers are doctors, they should be considerate of any inconvenience caused to the public while holding the demonstration.
The West Bengal government’s lawyer objected to the proposed location, arguing it would lead to traffic jams.

The court also set restrictions on the size of the protest, stating the stage must not exceed 40 feet in length and 23 feet in width, and the number of participants should not exceed 250 at a time.
Justice Ghosh ordered the authorities to ensure adequate arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents and instructed the organizers not to deliver provocative speeches that could disturb law and order.
The court also directed that a compliance report be submitted by the police by January 13.
The body of the on-duty postgraduate trainee was discovered in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed charges against the main accused, Sanjay Roy, who was a civic volunteer with the local police, for allegedly committing the crime on the same day while the victim was resting in the seminar room during a break.
Doctors’ associations in the state have been protesting and demanding prompt justice for the slain medic.
Earlier, Junior doctors in West Bengal went on a 42-day strike, demanding a thorough investigation into the incident and improved security in hospitals. The trial for the rape and murder of a doctor began on November 11 in a Kolkata court, three months after the victim’s body was discovered at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The proceedings held in-camera at the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das.
The victim’s parents allege that the ongoing investigation has been insufficient, with key evidence reportedly missing. They have approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking a fresh inquiry.
