Today, On 19th December, The parents of the RG Kar rape and murder victim have asked the Calcutta High Court for a fresh investigation into the case. They claim important evidence has been lost during the ongoing CBI-led probe and have urged the court to act quickly. Their request comes after two accused in the case were granted bail on December 14.

Kolkata: The parents of the doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital approached the Calcutta High Court on Thursday, requesting a new investigation into the crime. Pointing out their lack of confidence in the current inquiry, which sparked significant protests, they sought a directive for a fresh investigation into their daughter’s rape and murder.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh instructed their lawyer to include the CBI currently investigating the case as a party in the petition and to bring the matter back before the court on Monday.
The body of the on-duty postgraduate trainee doctor discovered in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. On December 13, the Sealdah court granted bail to Sandip Ghosh, the ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of the Tala police station.
They granted bail because the CBI failed to file charges against them within the 90-day statutory period, as noted by their lawyers. Ghosh faced accusations of tampering with evidence, while the police officer was charged with delaying the filing of an FIR after the body was found.
The CBI filed a charge sheet against the primary suspect, Sanjay Roy, indicating that he, a civic volunteer with the local police, allegedly committed the crime while the victim was sleeping in the hospital’s seminar room during a break.
Junior doctors in West Bengal went on a 42-day strike, demanding a thorough investigation into the incident and improved security in hospitals. The trial for the rape and murder of a doctor began on November 11 in a Kolkata court, three months after the victim’s body was discovered at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The proceedings held in-camera at the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das.
The victim’s parents allege that the ongoing investigation has been insufficient, with key evidence reportedly missing. They have approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking a fresh inquiry.
