Yesterday, On 16th July, Digvijaya Singh filed a petition challenging his BJP rival who defeated him in the 2024 Rajgarh Lok Sabha elections. The Congress had hoped to secure at least three to five seats in Madhya Pradesh, including strongholds like Rajgarh and Chhindwara, once dominated by former Chief Minister Kamal Nath.
Rajgarh: Veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh filed a petition in the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Tuesday (July 16), alleging irregularities in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Rajgarh. Singh, who lost to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Rodmal Nagar by a margin of approximately 1,46,089 votes, claimed there was manipulation of electronic voting machines (EVMs).
According to Singh’s office, the petition details the sequences of alleged irregularities and asserts that election norms were not followed in the constituency. Singh’s lawyer, Sanjay Agarwal, stated that the petition alleges violations of the Constitution of India and the Representation of the People Act, seeking the cancellation of Nagar’s election.
The petition also criticizes the Election Commission of India for not adhering to the Supreme Court’s directives on EVM checking and verification.
Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, said,
“We have some questions which the Election Commission is not answering. The Commission has violated directions of the Supreme Court. If you ask common people for their opinion, 60-70 per cent of the people say that elections should not be conducted through EVMs. So, I have filed a petition with the (Madhya Pradesh) High Court and we will submit proof of the points that we have applied,”
Digvijaya Singh criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the government for not addressing concerns about Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
He stated,
” ECI had not implemented the Supreme Court’s decision from April 26.”
Singh emphasized the importance of every vote being correctly recorded and counted, and highlighted the need for free and fair elections.
During his campaign, Singh indicated that this would be his final election and appealed for voter support. He previously accused the returning officer of not following the ECI’s directives.
The Congress Party hoped to secure at least three to five Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh, including strongholds like Rajgarh and Chhindwara, formerly led by ex-Chief Minister Kamal Nath.
However, the party did not win any seats, as the BJP claimed victory in all 29 seats in the state.
