The Rajasthan High Court dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) requesting live streaming of court proceedings. Citing the availability of video conferencing facilities, the court declined the petitioner’s plea, disposing of the PIL.

Rajasthan: Recently (7th March): The Rajasthan High Court dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking live streaming of court proceedings, citing the availability of video conferencing facilities for litigants.

The division bench, led by Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice Bhuwan Goyal, rejected the petitioner’s request, emphasizing the existing provision of video conferencing.

Taking into consideration that presently video conferencing facility is being provided to all the litigants and the petition seeks specific direction, we are not inclined to issue any direction at this stage,” said the Court.

Advocates Sakshi Srivastava and Neetu Singh represented the petitioner, while Senior Advocate AK Sharma and Advocate Vishnu Kant Sharma appeared for the respondents. The PIL, brought by Harshit Dudawat, was disposed of by the Court following its decision.

While some high courts across India, including Gujarat, Gauhati, Calcutta, Telangana, and Orissa, have embraced live streaming of court proceedings, the Rajasthan High Court has opted to continue providing video conferencing facilities.

However, the Supreme Court introduced live streaming for Constitution Bench hearings via YouTube, with plans for a dedicated live-streaming platform announced by former Chief Justice of India UU Lalit in 2022.

Case Title: Harshit Dudawat vs. The Hon’ble High Court of Rajasthan.
