The Punjab and Haryana High Court, led by Acting Chief Justice Ritu Bahri and Justice Aman Chaudhary, has taken a decisive step against drug trafficking, particularly in the border areas of Punjab. This action was spurred by a news report in “The Pioneer” Chandigarh edition, which revealed that the Border Security Force (BSF) had identified 75 individuals suspected of involvement in drug trafficking. The BSF’s concerns included the need for preventive detention of smugglers to combat drug smuggling effectively.

In response to this alarming situation, the High Court issued notices to the States of Punjab and Haryana, as well as the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). The court has requested comprehensive status reports detailing the measures being implemented to address this critical issue. Specifically, the NCB has been directed to provide data on the number of individuals suffering from drug addiction in both states.

The court’s concern extends beyond the immediate issue of drug trafficking. It has also sought suggestions on preventive strategies to educate those who are not yet addicted to drugs. The aim is to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and to implement measures that can deter individuals from falling prey to this menace. This initiative comes in the wake of significant narcotics seizures in Punjab, including 755 kg of narcotic items reportedly supplied via drones along the border in 2023.

By taking suo moto cognizance of this issue, the Punjab and Haryana High Court demonstrates its commitment to addressing the growing problem of drug trafficking and addiction in the region. The court’s directive for comprehensive reports and preventive strategies underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for coordinated efforts between state authorities and national agencies to tackle this challenge effectively.
