Punjab and Haryana HC Bar Association President Vikas Malik Arrested by Chandigarh Police After License Suspension

CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh Police apprehended Vikas Malik, the President of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, on Friday(on 12th July). This arrest comes on the heels of his recent disqualification by the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, signaling serious repercussions for the legal practitioner.

Sources close to law enforcement reported that Malik was detained following an FIR lodged on July 1 at Police Station Sector 3, Chandigarh. The allegations against him are severe, involving charges under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), namely 115(2), 126(2), 190, 191(2), 351(2), and 351(3). These charges stem from accusations of a physical altercation with another lawyer, Ranjit Singh.

The legal ramifications for Malik escalated on July 10, when the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana took the drastic step of suspending his license and prohibiting him from practicing law across any court. This decision underscores the severity of the allegations against Malik and raises concerns about ethical standards within the legal community.

The Bar Council’s committee expressed profound dismay and astonishment at Malik’s actions, particularly his alleged involvement in the disappearance of a crucial hard disk/DVR from the PHHBA office premises.

“We are deeply alarmed and astonished by Malik’s boldness and alleged involvement in the disappearance of the hard disk/DVR from the PHHBA office, seemingly benefiting directly from its absence. While we acknowledge that an FIR initiates the investigation into these accusations, the unlawful removal of the hard disk clearly indicates Malik’s intent and effort to tamper with evidence.”

-stated the committee.
