Former MP Prajwal Revanna has moved the Karnataka High Court challenging his conviction and life imprisonment for raping his domestic worker. He cites contradictions in the victim’s testimony and procedural lapses in the trial.
Bengaluru: Former Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former Member of Parliament Prajwal Revanna has approached the Karnataka High Court challenging his conviction for repeatedly raping his domestic worker and recording videos of the act.
Revanna, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by Bengaluru Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat on August 2, is now seeking to overturn the verdict.
The trial court had convicted him for raping a domestic worker at two locations – his farmhouse in Gannigarh, Holenarasipur, and another property in Banashankari, Bengaluru. According to court records, the alleged incidents happened between January 1, 2021, and January 31, 2022.
In his appeal, Revanna claims that there are contradictions between the victim’s complaint and her testimony. He has alleged that the police “forced the victim to file the complaint.”
He has also questioned the reliability of evidence presented by the prosecution, including stains that were reportedly found on a bed years after the alleged incidents.
Through his plea, Revanna is seeking “quashing of the trial court’s verdict” and the setting aside of his conviction. He has argued that the prosecution’s case contains multiple inconsistencies and procedural lapses.
The appeal has been filed through advocate Basavaraj Sappannavar, and the Karnataka High Court is yet to schedule a hearing.
This case has drawn significant public attention due to the high-profile status of the accused and the nature of the charges.
Legal experts note that the High Court will examine whether there were substantial procedural errors in the trial and assess the reliability of the evidence presented before the lower court.
The trial court’s decision had imposed a life sentence, reflecting the severity of the crime, and highlighted the judiciary’s strict approach toward cases involving sexual assault and abuse of domestic workers.
The High Court’s upcoming hearing will be closely watched as it may set important legal precedents regarding evidence handling, witness credibility, and procedural compliance in high-profile criminal cases.
