Delhi High Court slammed a Delhi Police SI for abusing and threatening lawyers within court premises, warning of an FIR. The court emphasized, “Policemen cannot think they are above the law,” stressing their role as protectors, not predators.

The Delhi High Court expressed strong disapproval regarding the behaviour of a Sub-Inspector from the Delhi Police, who verbally abused and intimidated both the lawyers representing the complainant and the convict within the courthouse.
Justice Arun Monga took note of a joint verbal complaint made by both parties’ counsel, who stated that Sub-Inspector Narinder from the Okhla Industrial Area police station had used abusive language, threatened them, and created an environment of intimidation that nearly escalated to physical confrontation.

Even when a senior counsel attempted to step in, he faced similar treatment.
The Court observed,
“I am of the view that such misconduct on the part of SI Narinder cannot be countenanced under any circumstances. He is supposed to be protector of law and not a predator. He cannot turn his Khaki to the level of such arrogance that not only he misbehaved with the officers of this Court who are doing the honourable duty of assisting the Court in discharge of justice, but also threatened them with dire consequences merely because he thinks he is above law,”
While the Court initially considered issuing orders for the registration of an FIR against the police officer, it decided against this course of action after he offered an apology.
However, the Court specified that the apology must be provided in writing.
The Court stated,
“However, I am of the view that looking at the conduct of SI Narinder, the apology be submitted in writing by way of an affidavit. The needful be done by tomorrow,”
The court further remarked,
“He is supposed to be protector of law and not a predator.“
Advocate Himanshu Gupta represented the appellant, while Advocates Arun Khatri and Shelly Dixit stood for the complainant.
Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Sanjeev Sabharwal appeared on behalf of the State.
