The Delhi High Court has directed the police to assess security threats to Congress leader Udit Raj following his controversial remarks about BSP chief Mayawati. A beat officer has been assigned to maintain daily contact with Raj for the next two months to ensure his safety.

New Delhi: Today, On May 23, The Delhi High Court has recently taken a decision in response to a plea filed by Congress leader Udit Raj, who claimed that he has been receiving threats since February 2024.

These threats reportedly began after his comments against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati during a press conference in Lucknow.

The court has now directed the Delhi Police to keep a close watch on the situation.

Justice Ravinder Dudeja, who heard the case, asked the Delhi Police to look into any possible threats to Udit Raj’s safety.

The court also instructed that a beat officer be assigned to stay in regular contact with him for the next two months to make sure he remains safe.

According to the police, an investigation is already underway. The bench was informed that the matter is being looked into seriously.

After hearing all sides, the court disposed of the petition but gave clear directions.

It told the Station House Officer (SHO) and the assigned beat officer to remain vigilant and to personally share their contact information with Udit Raj so he can easily reach them if needed.

The issue started when Udit Raj made a controversial statement about BSP chief Mayawati. During a press conference in Lucknow, he had said that

“she should be strangled as she has stifled the social welfare movement.”

This remark triggered outrage and led to alleged threats from BSP leaders and workers.

After the backlash, Udit Raj used social media platform X to explain his stand.

In Hindi, he wrote,

“I questioned whether members of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had the ability to think critically.”

Later, Raj gave a clarification about what he meant by his earlier remarks.

He said,

“When I said Mayawati had ‘strangled the movement and now the time has come to strangle her,’

he was not talking about physical violence. Instead, he explained,

“people should recognize her actions and distance themselves from her leadership.”

Further clarifying, Udit Raj said that his statement meant

“Mayawati undermining the Bahujan movement, not to any literal act of violence.”

The Delhi High Court has now put a temporary protection measure in place by ordering the police to stay alert and provide basic security steps.

This decision was taken to ensure Udit Raj’s safety while the ongoing investigation continues.
