Today, On 18th February, The Gauhati High Court granted interim protection to Ashish Chanchlani in the IGL obscenity case. The court observed that the FIR lacks specific allegations against him. It also noted that Chanchlani is cooperating with the investigation. This relief ensures no immediate legal action against him.

The Gauhati High Court provided interim protection to YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani on Tuesday concerning the controversial episode of the show “India’s Got Latent.”

Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita, while considering Chanchlani’s anticipatory bail application, observed that the FIR lacked specific allegations and noted that Chanchlani was willing to cooperate with the investigation.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Kalita decided to grant interim protection to Chanchlani, referencing a recent Supreme Court order related to YouTuber Ranveer Allahabadia.

In a parallel development, the Supreme Court also granted Allahabadia interim relief concerning several FIRs filed in Mumbai, Guwahati, and Jaipur, instructing him to participate in the investigation regarding the obscene jokes case.

However, the bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh, criticized Allahabadia’s conduct, labeling the language he employed during the episode as “dirty” and “perverted.”

This case ignited significant public discourse following the registration of two FIRs in Mumbai and Guwahati.

On February 12, the Guwahati Police filed an FIR against Chanchlani based on a complaint from Alok Boruah, invoking Sections 79, 95, 294, and 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, along with Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Chanchlani, a well-known digital influencer in India, became embroiled in controversy after making a contentious remark on comedian Samay Raina’s show.

Earlier, on February 10, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced via social media that the Guwahati Police had registered FIRs against five prominent content creators, including Allahabadia and Chanchlani, for allegedly promoting obscenity on the show.

The accused include Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, Ranveer Allahbadia, and Samay Raina, among others.

The FIR filed against the influencers for engaging in sexually explicit and vulgar discussions in a show titled ‘India’s Got Latent.’

According to Sarma’s post, the Guwahati Crime Branch registered the case under Cyber PS Case No. 03/2025.

The legal sections invoked include:

  • Sections 79, 95, 294, and 296 of BNS 2023
  • Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000 (which pertains to publishing or transmitting obscene content in electronic form)
  • Sections 4/7 of the Cinematograph Act, 1952
  • Section 4/6 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986

If found guilty, the accused YouTubers could face severe legal consequences, including fines and imprisonment. The Cinematograph Act and IT Act impose strict penalties for obscenity and the transmission of inappropriate content online.
