Farewell To Delhi High Court | "No Work-Life Balance In Legal Profession": Justice Vibhu Bakhru

NEW DELHI: In a heartfelt and emotional farewell ceremony, outgoing Delhi High Court judge Justice Vibhu Bakhru gave a frank view about the realities of the legal profession, especially the intense work culture that defines it.

Speaking to his law researchers and colleagues during his farewell address, he openly admitted the lack of work-life balance in the legal field.

“My law researchers have learnt that there is no work life balance in this profession. There is only work, and that’s life,”

-he stated.

These words, though simple, reflect a profound truth about the demanding nature of the legal field.

Justice Bakhru’s farewell speech was delivered at an official event organised by the Delhi High Court on the occasion of his elevation to the post of Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.

As he moves on to this new responsibility, he took a moment to reflect on his personal and professional journey within the Delhi High Court.

Expressing heartfelt gratitude, he said-

“I owe a debt of deep gratitude to this court, as it has shaped me as a lawyer, a judge, and as a person. I am grateful to my colleagues, court staff and the vibrant bar of Delhi, each of whom have, in different ways, taught me the values of discipline, courage and compassion.”

Justice Bakhru made it clear that though he is leaving Delhi, he carries with him the deep impact the High Court has had on his life.

He spoke emotionally about how special the court will always be for him and what it represents in terms of values and legacy.

“Delhi High Court will always hold a special place in my heart. To leave is to carry a part of this place with me, its values, its people, its legacy. May this court continue to shine as a beacon of Justice,”

-he said.

Born in Nagpur in 1966, Justice Bakhru completed his schooling at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from Delhi University in 1987 and became a Chartered Accountant in 1989. Later, he pursued LLB in 1990 and enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi the same year.

His legal career flourished as he practised in multiple forums including the Supreme Court of India, Delhi High Court, Company Law Board, and various other tribunals. He was appointed as a Senior Advocate in July 2011.

Justice Bakhru became an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on April 17, 2013, and was confirmed as a Permanent Judge on March 18, 2015.
