The State informed the Division Bench, led by Acting Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari and Justice Vivek Bharti Sharma, that law and order was being maintained in the area, with strict surveillance in place throughout the day.

Uttarakhand: On Wednesday (27th Nov), the Uttarakhand Government informed the High Court that “no permission has been granted for the maha panchayat organized by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and other right-wing organizations” on December 1, which pertains to demands for the demolition of a mosque in Uttarkashi.

Recently, the High Court directed the police and civil administration to ensure law and order around Jama Masjid due to rising tensions following the demand from Hindutva groups to demolish the mosque.

The State informed the Division Bench, led by Acting Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari and Justice Vivek Bharti Sharma, that law and order was being maintained in the area, with strict surveillance in place throughout the day.

It was also stated that no permission had been granted for the mahapanchayat.

The Court responded, “You take all necessary steps (to maintain peace). We will adjourn the case,” and scheduled a hearing for December 5.

In a November 22 order, the Court directed the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police to ensure no untoward incidents occur.

The Alpsankhayak Seva Samiti, which intervened in the case, is seeking protection for the mosque against the threats made by Hindutva leaders to demolish it. The petitioners have alleged that these leaders are spreading false information about the mosque’s legality and making hate speeches against Muslims.

Violence had previously erupted in October in Uttarkashi following a rally by right-wing groups demanding the demolition of the 55-year-old mosque.
