The Bombay High Court dismissed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Rs 100 crore defamation suit against his brother Shamsuddin and his wife after the actor and his lawyer were absent during the hearing. Lawyers for Shamsuddin said the case was “baseless” and aimed to pressure their client over financial disputes.

The Bombay High Court on Friday dismissed a Rs 100 crore defamation case filed by actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui against his brother Shamsuddin and Shamsuddin’s wife. The case, which was filed last year, could not proceed because Nawazuddin and his lawyer were absent during the hearing, leading to the dismissal of his petition.

Representing Shamsuddin Siddiqui, lawyers Ali Kashif Khan Deshmukh, Snigdha Khandelwal, and Farid Sheikh argued that

“the entire case filed by Nawazuddin is baseless.”

They added that

“this petition was filed to pressure their client due to financial disputes.”

Nawazuddin Siddiqui had alleged that in 2008, he appointed his brother Shamsuddin as his manager when he was unemployed. The actor claimed that he entrusted Shamsuddin with multiple responsibilities, including auditing, filing income tax returns, and paying GST and other taxes.

Nawazuddin stated that during this period, he was focused on his acting work and trusted his brother blindly. He said he handed over everything to Shamsuddin, including

“credit cards, debit cards, ATM cards, checkbooks, bank passwords, and email addresses.”

According to Nawazuddin, Shamsuddin began

“deceiving and fraudulently using him.”

The actor alleged that his brother purchased several properties jointly but misled him by saying they were solely in Shamsuddin’s name. These properties, Nawazuddin claimed, included

“a flat on Yari Road, a farmhouse in Shahpur, a property in Dubai,” and 14 vehicles such as “a Range Rover, a BMW, and a Ducati.”

Nawazuddin further alleged that his brother and sister-in-law

“had spread false and defamatory statements about him,” which, he claimed, “damaged his image and caused him great mental and social harm.”

With this dismissal, Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Rs 100 crore defamation suit has been officially closed by the Bombay High Court, leaving his allegations against his brother and his wife unaddressed in court.
