The Delhi High Court observed a two-minute silence at 11 a.m. on Martyrs’ Day to remember those who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom. The tribute marked the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and saw all court proceedings briefly paused in solemn respect.
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday paid tribute to the freedom fighters of the country by observing a two-minute silence at 11 a.m. to remember those who sacrificed their lives during India’s freedom struggle.
The solemn tribute was held inside the courtroom of the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. All regular court work was briefly stopped to mark the occasion. Judges, advocates, court staff and litigants present in the courtroom stood up together in silence as a mark of respect.

Before the silence began, the court master made a formal announcement and said,
“Everyone is requested to please stand up and observe two minutes’ silence in the memory of those who sacrificed their lives during the struggle for India’s freedom.”
Following this announcement, complete silence was observed inside the courtroom, reflecting collective respect and remembrance.
After the two minutes were completed, the court master signalled the end of the tribute, and normal court proceedings resumed. The moment was observed with discipline and dignity, highlighting the judiciary’s respect for the nation’s history and sacrifices.
The observance was held on the occasion of Shaheed Diwas, also known as Martyrs’ Day, which is marked every year on January 30. This day commemorates the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated on January 30, 1948.
Shaheed Diwas is observed across India to honour Mahatma Gandhi and countless freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the country’s independence.
On this day, government offices, courts, educational institutions and other public bodies across the nation pay homage to the martyrs by observing moments of silence and holding remembrance ceremonies, reinforcing the values of sacrifice, unity and national pride.
