At present, the main seat of the Bombay High Court functions from its historic building that was constructed in 1878.
The Gothic-style structure was originally designed to accommodate only 15 judges. Over the years, the court has expanded, and today it runs with 29 courtrooms and a sanctioned strength of 94 judges.
However, the old heritage building has been struggling to handle the increasing workload. Lawyers and litigants have often pointed out that
“the Bombay High Court’s Gothic building is bursting at the seams” and that “the overcrowded corridors, cramped courtrooms and inadequate storage hinder its smooth functioning.”
