Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu was born on April 4, 1967, into a humble farming family in Haryana. Coming from a modest background, he completed his early education at the Government High School in Masoodpur. He later pursued legal education and obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from Panjab University, Chandigarh, in 1992. Unlike many members of the judiciary who come from established legal families, Justice Sindhu was a first-generation lawyer who built his career through years of dedicated practice and professional service.

Legal Career and Practice at the Bar: After completing his law degree, Justice Sindhu enrolled with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana and began practising before the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Over the years, he developed extensive experience in several branches of law, including civil matters, criminal litigation, constitutional issues and service law disputes.

During his practice years, he appeared in several significant matters and represented various government bodies, including departments, municipal councils, boards and public sector corporations.

His legal expertise and reputation earned him important responsibilities. In 1999, he was appointed as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel, where he represented the Union government in legal proceedings. Later, in September 2008, he was appointed as Additional Advocate General for the State of Punjab, a position involving representation of the State in important legal matters before the High Court.

Elevation to the Bench: Justice Sindhu was elevated to the judiciary as an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on July 10, 2017. After serving as an Additional Judge, he was appointed as a permanent judge of the High Court on December 3, 2018.

During his tenure of nearly nine years on the Bench, Justice Sindhu handled a wide spectrum of cases involving civil disputes, criminal matters, constitutional questions and administrative law issues. Apart from judicial responsibilities, he also contributed to the functioning of the judiciary through various administrative assignments connected with the district courts and judicial institutions.

Contribution Beyond the Courtroom: Justice Sindhu’s public service extended beyond adjudication. He was associated with important committees and initiatives aimed at strengthening governance and protecting public rights. He served on committees including the State Executive Committee for Persons with Disabilities, Union Territory, Chandigarh, contributing to matters related to inclusion and welfare.

His journey from a farming background in Haryana to the Bench of one of the country’s important High Courts was seen as an example of dedication, perseverance and commitment to the legal profession.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court and the legal fraternity have expressed grief over his passing, remembering him for his professional integrity, judicial service and contribution to the administration of justice.
