Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan approved the request made by Sharma and Roushan to cancel this criminal case.
This police case was registered in 2023 after a complaint was filed by a member of the IT wing of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party. The complaint was against a news report published by OpIndia, which claimed that some migrant workers from Bihar had been attacked in Tamil Nadu. The report was alleged to be false.

Sharma and Roushan had initially submitted their request to cancel this case on May 24, 2023. This request was first heard by a vacation Bench of the High Court, which included Justice Sathi Kumar Sukumara Kurup. However, the Bench decided that the case should be heard by a regular Bench once the Court reopened in June 2023.
Meanwhile, Sharma and Roushan approached the Supreme Court to seek relief. The Supreme Court, in an order dated April 21, 2023, gave them protection from arrest for four weeks.
