Karnataka: On Monday, the Karnataka High Court made an oral observation in the case of Prajwal Revanna, a suspended leader of the Janata Dal (Secular) party. He is facing serious allegations of rape and sexual harassment and is currently in jail.

The court said that Revanna might not get bail only because the trial has been temporarily stopped for other accused persons involved in the same case.
Justice Pradeep Singh Yerur of the High Court pointed out that there appears to be strong and clear evidence against Prajwal Revanna, who is the main accused in the case. The judge explained that he will still hear Revanna’s arguments on April 15.
Justice Yerur said “Even if there is stay against others, there are cogent circumstances against you (Revanna)…unless you show something extraordinary…can bail be granted? I will hear you, no difficulty.”
Prajwal Revanna is the main accused in at least four criminal cases. These cases were registered after more than 2,900 video clips were shared on the internet and social media. These disturbing clips allegedly show sexual assaults against multiple women.
The first case against Revanna was filed in April 2023. The complaint came from a woman who had worked as domestic help at Revanna’s family farmhouse. She accused him of raping her repeatedly and said he threatened to leak video clips of the assault if she told anyone. According to her, the first rape happened in 2021.
Recently, a Bengaluru trial court framed criminal charges against Revanna. These include charges of:
- Rape
- Voyeurism
- Criminal intimidation
- Unauthorised circulation of private images
Earlier, in October 2023, the Karnataka High Court had dismissed his bail plea, and later the Supreme Court also refused to grant him bail.
In March 2025, Prajwal Revanna applied again for bail by filing a second bail petition before the High Court. His legal team argued that there is a “change in circumstances” which should allow him to be released on bail.
His counsel told the court that since the chargesheet has already been filed and the trial has been stayed for co-accused persons, Revanna should also be considered for bail.
His lawyer argued “After four and a half years (since the alleged incident of 2021), complaint has been filed. (There is) no explanation…How long can I be expected to continue like this? I cannot be expected to languish behind bars for reasons beyond my control.”
However, Special Public Prosecutor BN Jagadeesha, who is representing the State, strongly opposed Revanna’s bail plea. He asked for more time to file official objections in the court.
The SPP told the court “It went up to Supreme Court. Supreme Court rejected bail. No change of circumstances thereafter…He is the main accused…Against other people, trial was stayed. He has four cases.”
Senior Advocate Prabhuling Navadgi is currently appearing as the lead counsel for Prajwal Revanna in the High Court.
