BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court on Friday (June 20) clearly said that there is no legal obstacle to continuing the criminal trial against suspended Janata Dal (Secular) leader Prajwal Revanna. He has been accused of raping a domestic worker.
This rape case is one of four criminal cases registered against him. These charges came after over 2,900 obscene and disturbing videos—allegedly showing sexual assault of several women—were shared on social media and online, creating a nationwide uproar.
Earlier, the High Court had stopped the trial temporarily against HD Revanna, who is Prajwal’s father and a senior JD(S) leader. He is also an accused in the case, where it is alleged that a domestic worker was kidnapped and raped.
HD Revanna is facing two serious criminal cases—one for sexual assault and another for kidnapping. He had received bail in both cases on May 13, 2024.
Back in August 2023, the Karnataka High Court had said that the lower court should pause the trial proceedings in the sexual assault case until the next hearing of HD Revanna’s plea to cancel the case (quashing petition). This interim stay has been extended multiple times since then.
But now, Justice SR Krishna Kumar has made it clear that the stay order applies only to HD Revanna, and does not stop the trial against Prajwal Revanna in the same case.
The High Court gave this clarification while hearing HD Revanna’s petition to cancel the criminal case against him.
“There is no impediment to continue the trial against Prajwal Revanna”,
-the Court said clearly.
The Court has listed the case to be heard again on July 4, 2025.
Separately, in January 2025, the Karnataka High Court had also put a hold on trial proceedings in another case—the kidnapping case—against HD Revanna.

In Friday’s hearing, Senior Advocate CV Nagesh appeared on behalf of HD Revanna, while the State government was represented by Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Prof Ravi Varma Kumar.
The High Court also briefly listened to a bail plea filed by Prajwal Revanna in the rape case. This is his second attempt at getting bail. Both the Karnataka High Court and the Supreme Court had earlier denied bail to him in the first round of litigation.

Appearing for Prajwal Revanna, Senior Advocate Prabhuling Navadgi told the Court:
“My client has been behind bars for over a year with little to no progress in the trial.”
After this, the Court said it would hear Prajwal’s new bail plea on June 24, 2025.
