The Karnataka High Court will decide on October 30 whether to grant interim bail to actor Darshan Thoogudeepa for medical treatment amid his custody in the Renukaswamy murder case. His counsel cited health issues requiring surgery, opposed by the State. The court emphasized Darshan’s right to choose his medical facility and awaits further details on hospitalization.
Karnataka: The Karnataka High Court is likely to announce its decision on Wednesday, October 30, regarding the interim bail application of actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, who is jailed as a suspect in the Renukaswamy murder case. Justice S. Vishwajith Shetty reserved the order following arguments from Darshan’s counsel, Senior Advocate CV Nagesh, and State Prosecutor P. Prasanna Kumar.
The State presented Darshan’s medical reports from Ballari Central Prison and Ballari Government Hospital’s Neurology department, revealing recommendations for urgent surgery related to his spine and feet. “The medical reports recommend that Darshan undergo surgery to address medical issues,” the court noted, with Nagesh adding that Darshan has numbness in his feet and requesting permission for the operation at Mysuru’s Apollo Hospital, with Darshan covering expenses.
The State Prosecutor opposed interim bail, arguing that the medical reports didn’t specify a timeframe for hospitalization and suggested treatment at a government hospital. The court referred to Supreme Court rulings, stating “The State cannot dictate where an undertrial accused can seek medical treatment.” However, the court requested further details on why Mysuru was preferred, suggesting an evaluation by a Bengaluru surgeon to determine the urgency.

This decision on interim bail comes after the body of 33-year-old Renukaswamy, an auto-driver, was found on June 9, allegedly resulting from an attack spurred by Darshan’s instructions following online remarks about his alleged partner, Pavithra Gowda. Darshan, arrested on June 11, remains in Ballari Prison, having initially been denied bail alongside co-accused Pavithra Gowda and others by a sessions court.
