The incident unfolded during the proceedings presided over by Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice HB Prabhakara Sastry, causing immediate alarm among those present as item 26 was being addressed. The judges swiftly reacted upon noticing the presence of the weapon in the courtroom.
Sources familiar with the situation informed that the man proceeded to injure himself by pressing the razor against his throat, resulting in significant harm.
“Take them out immediately. We have no police? Take them to the doctor immediately .. Why is he doing that?”
-Chief Justice Anjaria urgently directed the court personnel, expressing concern over the unfolding situation.
Security personnel promptly responded to the distress call, swiftly intervening to escort the individual out of the courtroom premises.
Justice Sastry, visibly disturbed by the incident, questioned how the individual managed to bypass the stringent security measures in place and enter the courtroom while carrying a weapon, particularly on the day of his retirement.
“Question is how come security allowed him in with a razor? We have all tight security. Nobody, kindly, don’t touch that (file)… That has to be seized under panchnama. Is it a proper razor? Single blade?”
-Justice Sastry expressed his dismay and sought clarification regarding the nature of the weapon involved.
In response to the judge’s inquiry, it was confirmed that the weapon in question was a single-blade razor without a handle, raising further concerns about security protocols and screening measures.
In response to the unsettling incident, Chief Justice Anjaria promptly summoned the Registrar General for additional support. The Court took precautionary measures, instructing individuals to refrain from handling the case file left behind by the individual and directed authorities to officially seize it.
Upon learning that a court officer briefly held the case file, the Court expressed disapproval, emphasizing the protocol surrounding such actions.
“How can you receive? Without the permission of the court, the court officer is not supposed to receive … That too, when filed by an individual party (and not a lawyer). Let that file remain there,”
-the Court firmly stated, highlighting the necessity for adherence to procedural guidelines.
With the situation under control, the bench made the decision to adjourn the proceedings for the day, prioritizing the safety and well-being of all involved.
“We’ll adjourn the court proceedings, only few matters are (left),”
-the bench noted before concluding the session.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, lawyers present in the courtroom urged the Court to report the matter to the jurisdictional police. The bench assured that appropriate action would be taken, ensuring that necessary authorities were informed of the incident.
