Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju was moved to tears during her farewell at the Delhi High Court as she comforted her crying daughter, saying, “If you cry, I will cry.” Her heartfelt speech reflected gratitude, dedication, and deep love for the judiciary.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court witnessed an emotional moment on Monday as Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju broke down in tears during her farewell ceremony. The atmosphere in the courtroom turned deeply emotional when Justice Ganju saw her daughter crying while she was delivering her farewell speech.
In the middle of her address, Justice Ganju paused, smiled at her daughter to comfort her, and gently said,
“If you cry, I will cry.”
Her words touched everyone present, reflecting the strong bond she shares with her family.
Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju, known for her dedication and integrity, was recently transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Karnataka High Court following a recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium in August this year.
The Central government officially notified the transfer on October 14. Alongside her, Justice Arun Monga was also transferred to the Rajasthan High Court.
However, Justice Ganju’s transfer faced strong opposition from the legal community.
The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA), the DHCBA Women Lawyers, and several other members of the Bar wrote to Chief Justice of India BR Gavai expressing their protest and requesting reconsideration of her transfer. Many lawyers praised Justice Ganju for her fairness, humility, and unwavering commitment to justice.
In her farewell speech, Justice Ganju expressed her gratitude toward her colleagues, staff, and family, acknowledging the suddenness of her transfer.
She mentioned that due to the unexpected timing, her entire family could not attend the farewell.
During her emotional address, she also spoke about her work ethic and the criticism she sometimes faced for working long hours.
She said,
“I am conscious that working late into the night or over weekends has at times invited criticism or misunderstanding, yet I have never regarded diligence as a fault. The demands of justice do not always keep to the clock and our foremost duty must remain to the nation and to the litigants who seek relief from us. Personal comfort or even the prospect of disapproval cannot outweigh the obligation we owe to the cause of justice.”
Justice Ganju’s words reflected her strong sense of duty and passion for justice. She emphasized that her dedication to her role as a judge often required sacrifices, but she never let criticism deter her from serving the judiciary with sincerity.
In her speech, she also mentioned that she had been deeply inspired by former United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ganju quoted her saying,
“to fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”
She explained how Justice Ginsburg’s words have guided her throughout her judicial career, reminding her that the pursuit of justice should always be carried out with grace and inclusiveness.
Justice Ganju also expressed her deep connection with the Delhi High Court, where she spent several years of her career. She said,
“Truly, this Court has taught me all that I know about law, about fairness, about the profound responsibility. It has been my greatest teacher. My years here have been amongst the most fulfilling of my judicial journey – a journey I hope to continue, serving the cause of justice in the same spirit and with the same devotion that this Court embodies. Thank you all for your affection and goodwill.”
She concluded her heartfelt speech by thanking everyone who had supported her during her time at the Delhi High Court — from her colleagues on the Bench to the staff members, registry officials, stenographers, and law researchers.
Justice Ganju expressed her appreciation for their cooperation, professionalism, and dedication, which, she said, made her journey meaningful and rewarding.
As Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju moves to the Karnataka High Court, her farewell from Delhi leaves behind memories of compassion, sincerity, and judicial excellence.
Her emotional speech and commitment to justice serve as a reminder of the human side of the judiciary — one filled with empathy, dedication, and integrity.
