“In our country and in West Bengal, there are a large number of people who cannot come to court. Only politicians can do something to help them. I want to work for those people now.”
-Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay

Justice Gangopadhyay, known for his forthright approach and dedication to uncovering corruption, expressed his motivations in a candid conversation with the media. He stated,

“For the past couple of years, I was dealing with some matters in which huge corruption had been unearthed. I feel like my duty as a judge is now over. This is a call of my conscience that now I should go to the people. In our country and in West Bengal, there are a large number of people who cannot come to court. Only politicians can do something to help them. I want to work for those people now.”

His words reflect a deep-seated desire to effect change beyond the judicial system, aiming to address the needs of those who may not have direct access to legal recourse.

Justice Gangopadhyay’s tenure at the Calcutta High Court was marked by his relentless pursuit of justice, particularly in cases involving significant corruption. His notable actions include ordering multiple Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiries into the West Bengal teachers’ recruitment scam, leading to the arrest of several high-profile individuals and the annulment of thousands of illegal appointments. His commitment to justice was unwavering, as he often voiced his frustrations with the slow pace of investigations and the challenges posed by political interference.

Despite his achievements in the judiciary, Justice Gangopadhyay’s methods and outspoken nature have not been without controversy. His interactions with the media and his direct engagement with political matters have sparked debates about the appropriate conduct for a sitting judge. His decision to allow media recording in his courtroom and his public criticisms of both the CBI and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government have led to tensions with legal professionals and politicians alike.

The judge’s criticisms extended beyond the courtroom, as he openly questioned the integrity of the TMC and even hinted at the possibility of seeking the Election Commission’s intervention regarding the party’s recognition. These actions, coupled with his direct comments on high-profile cases and individuals, have fueled discussions about judicial impartiality and the boundaries of judicial conduct.

As Justice Gangopadhyay prepares to embark on his political journey, his departure from the judiciary raises questions about the future of the cases he has championed and the broader implications for the separation of powers in India. His transition from judge to politician is unprecedented in recent times and underscores the complex interplay between the legal and political realms in the country.
