Assam: The Gauhati High Court on Friday gave Absolute Interim Anticipatory Bail to YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani in an obscenity case registered against him by the Guwahati police. Earlier, the court had provided temporary (interim) bail to him, which now has been made permanent.

This case is related to the popular online show “India’s Got Latent,” where podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia is the main accused person. A complaint was filed against the show alleging it promoted obscene language and behavior.

Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita confirmed the earlier temporary protection provided by the court today.

Last month, the Gauhati High Court had temporarily protected Ashish Chanchlani from being arrested but had asked him to cooperate with the police investigation.

The court, in its order dated February 18, said clearly,

“Considering the fact that no specific allegation is levelled against the petitioner in the FIR and the petitioner is ready to cooperate in the investigation. Moreover, one of the co-accused has already been granted protection by the Supreme Court of India. Hence, in the meanwhile, the petitioner is directed to appear before the Investigating Officer of Cyber P.S. Case No. 03/2025, within a period of 10(ten) days from the date of this order and co-operate in the investigation. If he does so within the stipulated period of time, in the event of his arrest in the aforesaid case, he shall be allowed to go on interim bail.”

The controversial episode was recorded on November 14, 2024, at Khar Habitat, Mumbai.

But it was shown online recently. This particular episode featured repeated abusive language by panel members, including Ashish Chanchlani, Ranveer Allahbadia, comedian Samay Raina, and others.

A complaint was filed at Cyber Police Station, Guwahati Crime Branch, on February 10, 2025, against Chanchlani and other panelists.

In this FIR, Chanchlani has been accused under serious charges like Sections 79 (using words or gestures insulting a woman’s modesty), 95 (hiring or using a child for committing an offence), 294 (selling obscene objects to children), and 296 (obscene acts and songs) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The FIR also mentions violations under the Information Technology Act, 2000, the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
