HDFC Bank MD & CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan has filed a plea in Bombay High Court seeking to cancel an FIR lodged by Lilavati Trust. Four judges recused before the case was assigned to Justices Karnik and Borkar.

Mumbai: Today, on July 14, HDFC Bank’s Managing Director and CEO, Sashidhar Jagdishan, has approached the Bombay High Court with a petition to cancel the FIR filed against him by the Lilavati Trust. The case is now listed before a division bench comprising Justice M.S. Karnik and Justice N.R. Borkar.

Interestingly, this matter had earlier come up before four different judges of the Bombay High Court. However, all four judges recused themselves from hearing the case for unspecified reasons.

After these recusals, the case has now finally been assigned to the current bench.

As per legal sources, Jagdishan is seeking relief from the High Court to quash the FIR filed against him by the Lilavati Trust, which is a well-known charitable institution in Mumbai.

The exact details of the FIR, including the allegations, have not been fully disclosed in the public domain yet.

However, the involvement of a high-profile figure like the CEO of HDFC Bank has drawn significant public and legal attention to the case.

The petition by Jagdishan has now entered a critical stage, as the newly assigned bench is expected to hear the matter soon. The case’s progression has already seen delays due to multiple judicial recusals.

No official statements or responses have been issued by either HDFC Bank or the Lilavati Trust regarding the FIR or the legal proceedings.

Background Of The Case

The famous Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai, run by the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust, on June 24 filed a legal petition in the Bombay High Court. They are asking for the investigation against HDFC Bank MD and CEO, Sashidhar Jagdishan, to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Trust has made a serious allegation that Sashidhar Jagdishan took Rs 2.05 crore as a bribe. They claim this money was given to help some ex-trustees keep illegal control over the hospital trust.

The matter first came up on Friday in front of a division bench led by Justice Sarang Kotwal, but he decided not to hear the case and recused himself. Now, the case will be given to a new bench.

This whole issue started after a complaint by Prashant Mehta, one of the trustees. He said that his father, a former trustee, was harassed for a long time over a loan recovery issue related to a company connected to the current trustees. Prashant Mehta also claimed that this constant pressure led to his father’s death.
