Mumbai, Maharashtra: Today (26th June): The Bombay High Court assured Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal that his plea for an extension of interim bail would be heard within the next 10 days.

Goyal’s lawyers, Aabad Ponda and Ameet Naik, requested an early hearing before Justice NJ Jamadar’s bench. Justice Jamadar had previously granted Goyal interim bail on medical grounds on May 6.

While presenting the plea, Ponda expressed frustration about being “shuttle cocked between courts” while seeking an extension of the interim bail. The assignment of judges had changed since May, and Justice Jamadar had directed Goyal’s lawyers to approach the current bench for the bail plea.

However, Justice Manish Pitale’s bench refused to hear the extension plea, stating it had been initially heard by Justice Jamadar. Following this, Goyal’s lawyers mentioned the plea again before Justice Jamadar’s bench.

During the hearing, Ponda highlighted two key issues in the petition: Goyal had managed to spend time with his wife before she passed away, and his medical treatment had commenced. Ponda accused the Enforcement Directorate of delaying the case by seeking adjournments.

The bench agreed to hear the plea for an extension within the next 10 days and assured a hearing date would be set soon.

In May, Goyal sought bail on humanitarian grounds as his wife Anita was terminally ill with cancer. She passed away shortly after Goyal was granted interim bail. Goyal is also undergoing treatment for cancer.

Goyal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in September 2023 for allegedly laundering money and siphoning off loans amounting to Rs 538.62 crore from Canara Bank to Jet Airways.

A special court refused him bail in February but allowed him to seek medical treatment at a private hospital. His bail plea was formally rejected in March, prompting Goyal to seek bail on merits and medical grounds from the high court.
