Gyanvapi Case | Allahabad High Court Dismisses Muslims Petition Over Hindus Prayer Rights in Gyanvapi Mosque Cellar

Uttar Pradesh: The Allahabad High Court, Today (26 Feb) rejected the plea filed by Muslim parties challenging a Varanasi court order allowing Hindu parties to offer prayers and puja in the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi Mosque.

Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal delivered the verdict.

The single-judge had reserved order in the matter on February 15.

The Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee filed a plea contesting a district court’s January 31 ruling allowing Hindu prayers to be conducted in the southern cellar or basement (tekhana) of the Gyanvapi Mosque.

This decision arose amidst an ongoing civil court case revolving around conflicting assertions regarding the religious nature of the Gyanvapi compound.

According to the Hindu side, Hindu prayers were previously offered by the family of Somnath Vyas in the mosque’s cellar until 1993, when the government led by Mulayam Singh Yadav purportedly prohibited it. Conversely, the Muslim side refuted this claim, asserting their historical possession of the mosque’s premises.

The primary dispute concerning the Gyanvapi compound centers on the Hindu side’s assertion that a portion of an ancient temple on the land was demolished during the reign of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in the 17th century. Consequently, they seek authorization to pray within the complex.

Contrarily, the Muslim side contends that the mosque predates Aurangzeb’s rule and has undergone numerous modifications throughout its history.
