Mumbai: The Enforcement Directorate (ED), On Wednesday, informed the Bombay High Court that the interim bail granted to Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal on medical grounds for two months might be extended for an additional three weeks if he undergoes a medical examination at Tata Cancer Hospital.
Previously, on May 6, the high court approved interim bail for Goyal, who arrested in a money laundering case by the ED, citing medical reasons. The 75-year-old now submitted an application seeking an extension of this bail.

Goyal’s attorney, Aabad Ponda, addressed a single bench of Justice N J Jamadar, stating,
“His (Goyal’s) health condition continues to remain poor, and his mental health is worsening. He is in a depressive state. He is having suicidal thoughts. He has seen his wife suffer and die, and now he himself is going through the same.”
Ponda also presented a report from a psychiatrist who had examined Goyal.
The Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) counsel, Hiten Venegaonkar, informed the court that a comprehensive medical report is essential.
Venegaonkar stated,
“Let the interim bail be extended for three weeks, but he should be examined at the Tata Cancer Hospital, and a proper medical report can be submitted to this court.”
However, Goyal’s counsel, Aabad Ponda, mentioned that Goyal reluctant to go to Tata Cancer Hospital. Ponda suggested extending the bail period to four weeks to allow Goyal to undergo a preliminary laparoscopic surgery.
Ponda explained,
“After this preliminary surgery, he has to undergo another surgery for his cancer treatment. The preliminary surgery can be done in four weeks.”
The court then instructed Ponda to file an affidavit regarding this matter and scheduled the next hearing for Thursday.
Naresh Goyal arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in September 2023, facing allegations of money laundering and siphoning off loans amounting to Rs 538.62 crore, which provided to Jet Airways by Canara Bank.
In November 2023, his wife, Anita Goyal, also arrested when the ED filed its chargesheet in the case. On the same day, she granted bail by the special court due to her age and medical condition. Sadly, she passed away on May 16.
The ED likely to further solidify its case against him, while Goyal’s legal team will undoubtedly look to challenge the allegations and argue for more permanent relief from the charges.
