Ex-Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhana Reddy has moved the Telangana High Court for bail and suspension of his conviction in the illegal mining case. The CBI court had sentenced him to 7 years for causing Rs 884 crore loss to the state.

Hyderabad: Today, On May 21, Gali Janardhana Reddy, a former Karnataka minister, who was recently found guilty in an illegal iron ore mining case, has now approached the Telangana High Court asking for bail.

He has also requested the court to suspend the decision made by the Special CBI Court that sentenced him.

On May 6, the Special CBI Court in Hyderabad had sentenced Reddy and a few others to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of them.

This punishment was given after the court found them guilty of being involved in illegal iron ore mining between 2007 and 2009, which caused a huge loss of Rs 884 crore to the government exchequer.

Reddy filed the bail petition in the Telangana High Court on Monday, hoping to get temporary relief while the High Court reviews the lower court’s verdict.

According to reports, the illegal mining operations were carried out without proper permissions and violated several environmental and mining laws.

These actions led to serious damage to public resources and caused large-scale financial loss to the state.

Reddy’s legal team has now asked the High Court to “suspend the lower court’s judgment” and allow him to be released on bail, arguing that he deserves a chance to challenge the decision made by the CBI court.

The High Court is expected to take up the matter soon and examine the reasons mentioned in Reddy’s petition.

The court may also review the grounds on which the Special CBI Court found him guilty, along with the details of the mining operations that allegedly led to the illegal profits and losses for the government.

This case has been under investigation for several years and is one of the biggest illegal mining cases in India.

Gali Janardhana Reddy, who was once a powerful political figure in Karnataka, has been facing several charges related to this matter.

The High Court’s decision on the bail plea will be important not just for Reddy, but also for others who were sentenced in the same case.

As of now, the court has not yet given a date for the hearing of this petition, but it is expected to come up soon.

Reddy continues to maintain that he is innocent and believes that the High Court will grant him relief.
