The NHRC had previously issued a reprimand to the Police for their inability to ensure the safety of Shahnawaz Ansari, who was tragically killed in a courtroom in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, as detailed in the case.
Shahnawaz Ansari was believed to be closely associated with the notorious gangster Mukhtar Ansari. He was the prime suspect in the homicide of Haji Ehsan, a leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and a well-known property dealer based in Najibabad, along with Ehsan’s nephew, Shadab.
Ansari had given himself up to the authorities in Delhi and was subsequently transported to the Bijnor court for a legal hearing. In a shocking turn of events, he was assassinated in December 2019 by unidentified gunmen who launched an attack inside the courtroom during the proceedings.
The legal proceedings regarding the Delhi Police’s appeal were conducted yesterday under the supervision of Justice Subramonium Prasad.
During the hearing, representatives for the Delhi Police argued that the responsibility for maintaining security within the court premises fell to the Uttar Pradesh Police, noting that the Delhi Police personnel who were escorting Ansari at the time were not armed.
Following the presentation of the case, Justice Prasad issued a temporary suspension of the NHRC’s directive, which had ordered the police to compensate Ansari’s family with a sum of Rs 7 lakh.
Furthermore, Justice Prasad announced the court’s decision to appoint an amicus curiae to assist in the matter and subsequently postponed the hearing until July 18.
Additionally, the court instructed the Delhi Police to include the Uttar Pradesh Police as a respondent in the ongoing legal matter.
