Delhi High Court To Hear Today Plea Against CJP’s Proposed Protest At Connaught Place’s Central Park

With counsel warning of a shutdown during the Dussehra weekend, the Delhi High Court has fixed 2:30 PM today for a plea against the Cockroach Janta Party’s proposed protest at Central Park, Connaught Place, and wants the Supreme Court’s orders in the Delhi protest matters placed before it.

New Delhi: Counsel’s mention that a protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Central Park, Connaught Place, on Friday, October 16, would shut down the area over the Dussehra weekend was enough for the Delhi High Court on Thursday to agree to take up the plea the same day [Plea against proposed CJP protest at Central Park, Connaught Place].

The High Court noted that the Supreme Court is already considering the issue. It told counsel to inform the other side and to be present at 2:30 PM with the case details and copies of the orders the Supreme Court passed on Thursday in the Delhi protest matters. Who the petitioner is, which Bench will sit and who the respondents are have not been reported.

The case made at the mention

Counsel described the venue as the “heart” of Connaught Place. According to counsel, the protest would bring the area to a complete halt and leave people without work over the Dussehra weekend. That is the petitioner’s side alone; the CJP’s response is not yet on record.

One of several protest cases

This plea joins a growing list of cases that trace back to the October 10 protests in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Before the Supreme Court are contempt pleas over the Metro closures on that day, challenges to police detentions and a challenge to Section 172 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. A day later, on October 11, the Delhi Police de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site and named Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi as alternatives. That decision is now being challenged in both the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court.

No order on the merits has been passed so far. The plea is expected to be heard in the afternoon.
