The case is based on Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s claim that Shashi Tharoor made “derogatory and malicious statements” about him during certain media interviews.

NEW DELHI: Today, 8th May: The Delhi High Court has agreed to hear BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s case against senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, where Chandrasekhar has alleged that Tharoor made derogatory and malicious statements during some interviews.

The matter was listed before the High Court recently, but the hearing was not held because both sides’ lawyers asked for a short delay in the matter. The Court accepted this request, also called a passover, which means the hearing is postponed for a brief period within the same day.

During the hearing, the lawyer for Rajeev Chandrasekhar informed the judge that Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, who is representing Chandrasekhar in this case, was currently busy arguing in another courtroom.

Because of this, the lawyer sought accommodation, which is a formal way to ask the court to delay the hearing. The Delhi High Court accepted this and decided to renotify the matter for hearing on May 20, 2025.

The case is based on Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s claim that Shashi Tharoor made “derogatory and malicious statements” about him during certain media interviews.

Chandrasekhar, through his legal team, has filed a civil defamation suit against Tharoor. He has asked the court to stop Tharoor from making any further remarks that might harm his image. As per the plea, Chandrasekhar has sought to restrain Tharoor from making any defamatory statements in the future.

In addition to that, while seeking a public apology, Chandrasekhar has also demanded Rs. 10 crore in damages from Tharoor. He has alleged that the statements made by Tharoor were defamatory and intended to “tarnish his reputation.”

The BJP leader’s lawsuit stems from a television interview in which Tharoor allegedly claimed that Chandrasekhar offered money to voters during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Chandrasekhar has strongly denied these allegations and views them as an attack on his integrity.

The defamation suit has been filed through the well-known law firm Karanjawala & Company, which is representing Rajeev Chandrasekhar in the case.
