NEW DELHI: Today(on 2nd May),The Delhi High Court has granted bail to three individuals who were accused of the murder of Ankit Sharma, an intelligence bureau (IB) officer, during the North-east Delhi riots in 2020. Justice Navin Chawla granted bail to Shoaib Alam, Gulfam, and Javed.
On the other hand, the court refused to grant bail to another accused, Nazim. The decision on his bail application is still pending, with a detailed order expected to be issued soon.
The case started when Ankit Sharma’s father, Ravinder Kumar, filed a First Information Report (FIR) on February 26, 2020. The FIR claimed that there were protests by both anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and pro-CAA demonstrators for two to three days at Chand Bagh Pulia, Main Karawal Nagar Road. These protests saw instances of stone pelting, brick batting, arson, firing, and sabotage from both groups.
According to Kumar, on February 25, 2020, his son went out to buy household goods but did not return for a long time. Worried about his son’s absence, he filed a missing persons complaint. Local residents later informed him that a man had been thrown into the Khajuri Khas nala from the Masjid of Chand Bagh pulia after being killed. Subsequently, Ankit’s body was recovered from Khajuri Khas nala near Chand Bagh Pulia.

The main accused in the case is former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain. On March 23, 2023, the trial court framed charges against Shoaib Alam, Gulfam, Javed, Nazim, Tahir Hussain, and others involved in the case. The charges include offenses under Sections 147 (Rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence), 302 (Murder), and 120B (Criminal Conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The Delhi High Court’s recent decision to grant bail to three of the accused has prompted discussions and reactions from different parties. It’s crucial to understand that bail doesn’t mean acquittal; the trial will proceed, and a detailed order is awaited for further clarification on the court’s decision.
The bail granted to Shoaib Alam, Gulfam, and Javed has raised questions about the progress of the investigation and the strength of the evidence against them. It is crucial to ensure a fair trial, where all parties involved have the opportunity to present their arguments and evidence before the court. The decision to grant or deny bail is based on several factors, such as the nature of the offense, the likelihood of the accused tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses, and the possibility of the accused absconding.
The North-east Delhi riots of 2020 left a significant impact with loss of life, property damage, and communal tensions. Ankit Sharma’s murder case is among those scrutinized during investigations and legal proceedings.
