Delhi Gymkhana Club Moves High Court Against Centre’s Order to Vacate 27.3-Acre Lutyens Property by June 5

Delhi Gymkhana Club has approached the Delhi High Court after a Central government directive asked it to vacate its 27.3-acre property in Lutyens’ Delhi by June 5.

The club’s plea was placed before Justice Avneesh Jhingan by Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who requested an urgent hearing.

The judge agreed to list the case for hearing on May 26 (Tuesday).

Earlier, On May 22, the Land and Development Office (L&DO) instructed the club to vacate and hand over its 27.3-acre premises at 2, Safdarjung Road.

The order cited clause 4 of the original lease deed, which permits the government to resume possession if the land is required for a public purpose.

The government said the land situated near the Prime Minister’s residence and other high-security installations in Lutyens’ Delhi is needed for strengthening and securing of defence infrastructure, governance facilities, and other vital public security purposes.

The government notice stated,

“Upon such re-entry, the entire plot of land measuring 27.3 acres, along with all buildings, standing erections, structures, lawns, and fittings thereon, shall vest absolutely in the Lessor, i.e., the President o f India, through the Land & Development Office,”

Further it said that the premises would be taken over by the Land & Development Office on June 5.
