TV actor T. Ravichandran has approached the Madras High Court for anticipatory bail after being booked by CCB for allegedly threatening to “slit the throat” of MP Kamal Haasan. The court has adjourned the plea to August 20.

Chennai: On August 18, Television actor T. Ravichandran has moved the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail after a case was reportedly filed against him by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) police in Chennai. The case relates to an alleged death threat he made against Member of Parliament (MP) and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan.

On Monday, August 18, 2025, Justice G. Jayachandran directed the government advocate to obtain instructions from the CCB before the matter could proceed further.

The court then adjourned the hearing on the advance bail plea to Wednesday, August 20. During the hearing, the petitioner told the court that the words spoken by him in a YouTube interview were “unintentional.”

The background of the case relates to an event held recently in Chennai. Kamal Haasan, who is also a Rajya Sabha member, took part in the 15th anniversary celebrations of actor Suriya’s Agaram Foundation.

The foundation primarily provides financial support to young students to help them pursue higher education. Speaking at the event, the MP praised the work done by the foundation and explained the role of education in social progress.

He said that

“education was the only weapon that could break the shackles of Sanatana Dharma.”

This remark led to a sharp reaction from T. Ravichandran. While speaking to a YouTube channel later, he strongly opposed Kamal Haasan’s comments.

The petitioner reportedly said that he did not accept the actor-politician describing Sanatana Dharma as shackles that held back people who did not follow it. He went further and warned that

“he would slit the throat of the MP if he continued to make such comments.”

The YouTube interview quickly created a controversy and drew widespread criticism. Following this, MNM vice-president and retired IPS officer A.G. Mourya filed a complaint with the Greater Chennai Commissioner of Police on August 10, 2025.

The complaint highlighted the death threat issued against Kamal Haasan and sought immediate action. The matter was then transferred to the CCB, where an FIR was registered.

In his bail plea, however, the petitioner argued that the FIR had been registered without conducting any preliminary inquiry.

He also informed the court that he was not even aware of the exact crime number mentioned in the FIR. Defending himself, the petitioner told the court that he had no real intention of issuing a death threat and emphasized that

“he hailed from a very decent family and that he was ready to abide by any condition to be imposed by the court for the purpose of grant of anticipatory bail.”

The matter will now come up for further hearing on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, when the CCB is expected to provide its instructions to the court.
