The three-member bench, consisting of Justices Arijit Banerjee, Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, and Rajarshi Bharadwaj, issued contempt rules against Ghosh and eight others related to an attack on lawyers that occurred on April 25.
None of the accused appeared personally before the bench, although Ghosh was represented by his legal counsel.
The incident on April 25 stemmed from a petition filed by senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, which challenged the legality of the state cabinet’s decision to create supernumerary posts for school staff in 2021.
This petition was accepted by Justice Biswajit Basu. Later that evening, a group of teachers, who were beneficiaries of the cabinet’s decision, reportedly attacked Bhattacharya’s chamber and harassed him and his colleagues.
Following the Supreme Court’s dismissal of the state government’s appeal in the cash-for-jobs scam related to the 2016 state-level selection test, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had called for the “political isolation” of Bhattacharya for filing court cases that uncovered corruption in the recruitment process.
A group of lawyers subsequently approached Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam’s division bench, seeking the court’s intervention. They claimed that Ghosh had incited the attackers during a news conference after Justice Basu’s ruling.
Sources indicate that if the three-member bench finds Ghosh guilty, he could face imprisonment and be taken into custody directly from the court.
Ghosh had previously been arrested in connection with the multi-crore Saradha scam.
