CHANDIGARH: The Supreme Court Collegium on Thursday (August 7, 2025) approved the appointment of Ms. Ramesh Kumari, a seasoned judicial officer, as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The decision came during a meeting of the three-member Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and comprising Justices Surya Kant and Vikram Nath. The collegium’s resolution was promptly shared on the official website of the Supreme Court, underlining the transparency in judicial appointments.

“The Supreme Court Collegium has on 07th August, 2025 approved the proposal for appointment of Ms. Ramesh Kumari, Judicial Officer, as a Judge of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana,”

the statement read.

Ms. Ramesh Kumari is known in legal circles as a respected judicial officer with years of experience at the subordinate judiciary level. Her elevation is seen as a recognition of her judicial competence and commitment to the rule of law.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court is presently functioning with 59 judges as against its sanctioned strength of 85. The appointment of Ms. Kumari comes at a time when the High Court is facing a shortage of judges, affecting the speed and efficiency of justice delivery.

Just a few days earlier, on August 4, 2025, ten newly elevated judicial officers were administered the oath of office as judges of the same High Court, signifying an ongoing effort to fill vacancies and strengthen the judiciary.
