The Calcutta High Court upheld life imprisonment of a man convicted of murdering his pregnant wife in 2014, ruling the crime caused two deaths. The division bench dismissed his appeal, calling the accused a “cold-blooded killer.”

KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court has upheld the life sentence of a man convicted of murdering his pregnant wife in 2014, noting that the crime resulted in the loss of two lives. Dismissing the convict’s appeal, a division bench characterized the accused as a “cold-blooded killer,” whose violent actions led to the deaths of both his wife and her unborn child.
The bench, consisting of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha and Justice Rai Chattopadhyay, declined to reverse the conviction of Ram Chandra Pramanik, who had been found guilty by a sessions court in Howrah for killing his wife, Sampa Pramanik. The incident occurred on January 21, 2014, when Sampa, married to the accused for about ten years, was attacked inside their home.
The court established that she was repeatedly struck with a blunt object and subsequently strangled, resulting in her death. During the appeal, it was noted that the victim was approximately 18 weeks pregnant at the time of the attack, and the court asserted that the husband must have been aware of her condition when the assault took place.
The bench rejected the defense’s argument related to post-mortem findings, which indicated traces of alcohol in the victim’s viscera. The judges clarified that even if the victim had consumed alcohol and was slightly intoxicated, it did not justify the brutal assault committed by the appellant.
In its judgment delivered the bench stated,
“The appellant, therefore, has taken two lives. He had been reckless and inhuman,”

They further noted that the nature of the injuries and the method of the attack suggested that the assault lasted for an extended period estimated to be at least 20 to 30 minutes before her death.
Describing the accused as a “cold-blooded killer,” the bench concluded that there was no basis to alter the trial court’s findings. Ram Chandra Pramanik had previously been convicted under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for murder.
In March 2017, the Additional Sessions Judge, 2nd Court, Howrah, sentenced him to life imprisonment. The High Court has now affirmed this conviction and sentence, effectively concluding the appeal.
