Jalpaiguri, West Bengal: A man has been given the death penalty for brutally murdering his wife and 18-month-old daughter. The incident took place in Nagrakata, Jalpaiguri district, and the verdict was announced by the Jalpaiguri Sessions Court on Tuesday.

Section 302 of the IPC states that any person who commits murder shall be punished with the death penalty or imprisonment for life. Murder is defined under Section 300 of the IPC as the intentional killing of another person without any justification or excuse.
The crime came to light after Lal Singh’s mother-in-law filed a police complaint. She accused him of using an axe to kill his wife and daughter. According to Jalpaiguri Superintendent of Police Khandbahale Umesh Ganpat, after committing the murders, Lal Singh tried to end his own life. He used a knife to injure himself in the abdomen.
Lal Singh was arrested and given medical treatment for his self-inflicted injuries. Once he recovered, he was brought before the court. During the trial, 13 witnesses were questioned to gather evidence. Public prosecutor Prasenjit Deb shared that the court found Lal Singh guilty last week and announced the death sentence on Tuesday.
