CJI B.R. Gavai praised CM Yogi Adityanath for his leadership and dedication. He called him one of the most powerful and hardworking chief ministers in the country.
Prayagraj: On May 31, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice B.R. Gavai recently spoke about how the Indian Constitution has helped the country stay united and strong during difficult times.
He was speaking at the inauguration of a newly built advocate chamber building and a multi-level parking complex at the Allahabad High Court.
The project cost around Rs 680 crore. During the event, CJI Gavai also praised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, saying he is “one of the most powerful and hardworking Chief Ministers in the country.”
Talking about the importance of the Indian Constitution, CJI Gavai said that it has played a big role in holding the country together for the last 75 years.
He said,
“Every time the nation has faced a crisis, we have emerged stronger and more united. This strength comes from the Constitution.”
He further explained how all three parts of the government – the legislature, executive, and judiciary – have worked together to ensure fairness and equal opportunity for all citizens.
Citing an important example, he said,
“Land reforms, such as distributing land from landlords to the landless, were crucial milestones supported by constitutional mechanisms.”
CJI Gavai also spoke about the famous Kesavananda Bharati case from 1973. He pointed out that while Parliament can make changes to the Constitution, it cannot change the basic structure of it.
He said,
“Both Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles are the soul of the Constitution. They are like the two wheels of a golden chariot — if one stops, the entire vehicle halts.”
He also talked about how important it is for lawyers and judges to work together.
He said,
“Bar and Bench must work hand in hand to advance the wheels of justice.”
CJI Gavai appreciated the efforts made by the Allahabad High Court. He said that many judges had given up their official residences so that new chambers for lawyers could be built.
He noted this as a good example for courts across the country.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who also attended the event, said that the state government is fully committed to supporting lawyers and their welfare.
He mentioned that seven new legal complexes will be built in different districts of Uttar Pradesh.
He said,
“The advocate welfare fund has been increased from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh, and the eligible age limit has been raised from 60 to 70 years. An additional ₹500 crore has been allocated for this purpose.”
CM Yogi also thanked the Allahabad High Court for helping in the successful planning and management of the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.
He appreciated that the High Court did not put a stay on any major project during the preparations.
He said,
“It was possible because the High Court did not impose a stay on any key project.”
The new infrastructure at the Allahabad High Court is one of the most modern facilities in the country. It includes a multi-level parking complex that can hold up to 3,835 vehicles and has 2,366 new chambers for advocates.
The 14-storey building has five levels of parking, six floors of chambers, and is fitted with 26 lifts, 28 escalators, and four travellators.
Many important people were present at the event. These included Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Supreme Court Judges Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, J.K. Maheshwari, Pankaj Mithal, and Manoj Mishra.
Chief Justices of the Allahabad High Court and Delhi High Court, Arun Bhansali and D.K. Upadhyay, also attended.
