The Central Government Today (March 8) approved three lawyers as judges of Calcutta High Court. Two recommended names still await clearance.

The appointments were officially announced by the Union Minister of Law and Justice (Independent Charge), Arjun Ram Meghwal, on Saturday through X (earlier known as Twitter).

The following are the lawyers who have been appointed as judges:
– Smita Das De;
– Reetobroto Kumar Mitra;
– Om Narayan Rai
These three lawyers were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on February 28 along with two other advocates.

However, the government has only approved three names till now.
The two advocates whose appointments are still pending are “Md Talay Masood Siddiqui and Krishnaraj Thaker”.
Currently, Calcutta High Court has fewer judges than required. On February 1, the High Court had only 43 judges, while its actual sanctioned strength is 72.
This means there are 29 vacancies still to be filled.
