Calcutta High Court | Subhendu's Lawyer Summonsed to Lalbazar, Files Case
Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata: The legal battle surrounding the Sandeshkhali case has taken a new twist as lawyer Suryanil Das has filed a case in the Calcutta High Court (Calcutta HC) after being summoned by the Kolkata Police. The summons, received without specifying the reason, prompted Das to approach the High Court for redressal.

The development unfolds against the backdrop of Suryanil Das representing Subhendu Adhikari in a case related to Sandeshkhali. Sources reveal that the high court has granted permission for Shuvendu’s lawyer to file a case, and Justice Kaushik Chand is expected to preside over the proceedings on Tuesday.

Das, a lawyer practicing in the High Court, voiced his grievance, alleging that he became a target of police scrutiny due to his involvement in the Sandeshkhali case. The summons required his appearance at Lalbazar on the 21st, leaving him with no choice but to seek legal recourse. The outcome of the High Court hearing on Tuesday will determine whether Suryanil Das receives any relief in this matter.

“Incidentally, last week, a BJP delegation, led by the Leader of Opposition, Subvendu Adhikari, was halted near Science City on their way to Sandeshkhali. In response, lawyer Suryanil Das questioned the legality of such an action, emphasizing the need for a legal basis for the obstruction,”

The Lalbazar police station issued a notice to lawyer Suryanil Das on February 21, compelling him to appear in connection with the incident. However, the ambiguity surrounding the summons raises questions about its legal standing. The High Court hearing scheduled for Tuesday is anticipated to clarify whether Suryanil Das is obligated to comply with the summons.

The legal proceedings highlight the increasing tensions between political figures and law enforcement, raising concerns about the exercise of legal authority.

The outcome of Tuesday’s hearing remains uncertain. Will Suryanil Das find respite in the High Court, or will the legal complexities surrounding the Sandeshkhali case continue to deepen? Only time will unravel the intricacies of this unfolding saga.
