Today, 19th April, Lawyers at Calcutta High Court no longer required to wear gowns following a recent exemption. This change effective during the summer season, offering relief from traditional courtroom attire. The exemption decision aims to provide comfort to legal professionals amid warmer weather conditions. This adjustment reflects a practical approach to courtroom attire during specific weather periods.

Calcutta: Due to rising temperatures, Calcutta High Court exempted lawyers from wearing black gowns during court sessions until the summer ends. Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam directed the Registrar General to issue a notice, acknowledging Kolkata’s ongoing heatwave.
Due to persistent summer heat with daytime temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius, lawyers at the Calcutta High Court exempted from wearing advocates’ gowns.

Previously, various High Courts like the Karnataka HC issued comparable directives, considering the escalating tensions.
As per the notification issued by the Registrar General,
“The wearing of Advocates’ gowns is exempted until the Court resumes after the Summer Vacation on June 10, 2024, due to weather considerations.”
Other High Courts, such as the Karnataka High Court, also issued similar notifications.

The summer break at Calcutta High Court will start on May 19.
According to Uday Shankar Chatterjee, a lawyer practicing at the high court, the Chief Justice also granted this exemption during the peak summer weeks last year.
At a moment when the India Meteorological Department forecasted severe heat conditions for the next five days in Calcutta and nearby districts, this relief is timely. Citizens urged to exercise caution during this period.
