KOLKATA: Today(on 21st March), The Calcutta High Court has mandated the West Bengal government to provide immediate rehabilitation to the individuals displaced by the collapse of an unauthorized five-storey building in the bustling Garden Reach locality.
The division bench, led by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, emphasized the urgent need for the state government to ensure the well-being of those affected.
During the proceedings, the bench, which also includes Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, laid out clear instructions for the state authorities.

They were ordered to-
“provide the affected people with necessary shelter and support them with adequate ration material so that they would be able to take care of themselves.”
Furthermore, the court has scheduled a hearing on April 4 to address a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the building collapse. This upcoming session is anticipated to delve deeper into the circumstances leading to the disaster and the subsequent response measures.
The petitioners provided the court with a harrowing account, stating that
“those who died owing to the collapse of the under-construction building were residents of shanties around it.”
This revelation on the vulnerability of the affected community and the dire conditions under which they lived.

The Calcutta High Court has also called for a detailed report from the concerned authorities. They are required to submit an affidavit outlining the remedial actions undertaken to rehabilitate the victims of the collapse. This step is indicative of the court’s proactive approach in monitoring the situation and ensuring that the government’s response aligns with the urgent needs of the affected populace.
