Kolkata: Today (On June 11th): The Calcutta High Court directed the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), responsible for former BJP MP Arjun Singh’s security, to determine whether CCTV cameras installed by the West Bengal Police outside his house are infringing on his privacy.

Singh, who recently lost his re-election bid for the Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat, claimed in his petition that these cameras were compromising his privacy.

The court instructed the CISF to approach the state police to investigate the complaint.

Justice Amrita Sinha ordered the CISF to access the CCTV cameras installed outside Singh’s house and file a report by the next hearing on July 3.

In its report, the CISF mentioned that some of the cameras installed on street poles in front of Singh’s house are 360-degree rotating types, and their focus direction is unclear. A state police report explained that the cameras, installed in 2021, aim to prevent crime, manage law and order, track criminals, and monitor strangers.

It noted that 214 CCTV cameras were installed at 76 strategic points in the Barrackpore police commissionerate area, with no recent installations. Additionally, a surveillance project is underway to install 166 more CCTV cameras in the commissionerate area, including Singh’s residence in Jagaddal.
